India's automobile sector reported higher sales in April, with good numbers from passenger, commercial and two wheeler manufacturers, benefiting from the excise duty cuts in the federal budget and tough comparatives.According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the passenger and commercial vehicle segments grew 21.21 percent and 7.62 percent respectively in April, while two-wheeler sales increased 5.37 percent.

Exports, including passenger, commercial and two-wheelers rose 31.91 percent during the month, SIAM added.Deepak Jain, analyst with Anand Rathi Securities Ltd., attributed the growth to the 'low base' effect -- due to a not-so-good performance in April last year -- and inventory building at the dealer level.Total April sales including exports for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp., grew 23.8 percent year on year to 62,336 units. Tata Motors Ltd., India's largest vehicle maker, said April total sales fell 5.8 percent to 38,149 units due to lower sales in its passenger vehicle business and 43 percent decline in exports.
